The Supreme Pancake

A bit of history now. In October 1992 I formed a quintet called The Supreme Pancake (from a line in Flann O'Brien's The Third Policeman). The line-up was myself on violin & piano, Nikki Kemp on flute, James "Bug" Flower on tenor sax, Natasha Thompson (née Lawlor) on double bass, and Paul Deats on percussion (mainly bicycle pump). Paul had stepped in at the last minute, replacing drummer Biff Cowley, who had pulled out. This was in the Nottingham Playhouse foyer, on October 28th 1992. The band was definitely a precursor to Waiting On Dwarfs, and three of the tunes we played on that date (Tasty Cake, Catfood Advert, and March of the Milkmen) have evolved into Knowledge Bump, Blattyosynthesis and March of the Milkmen, in the WOD pad. John Stevens was in the audience, and the following day he bought me a curry and told me to buy a pocket cornet. So I did.
